Rise in corona numbers in China: component shortage expected to worsen

The tense situation on the procurement market for electronic components will continue to accompany us in 2023.

The situation is currently worsening again due to the wave of corona infections in China, which is why both price increases and longer delivery times are expected. The strict zero-covid strategy of the Chinese government was discontinued on December 07, 2022. This measure was justified with easier disease courses of new virus variations.

Since the relaxation, corona infections in China have been increasing rapidly. This leads on the one hand to much human suffering, on the other hand economic consequences are already visible.
Companies are experiencing numerous sickness-related absences, which are already leading to the closure of entire manufacturing sites.

A further wave of infection is threatening for Chinese New Year on January 22, when several hundred million Chinese are expected to travel to visit their relatives. This will further exacerbate the situation. We expect supply chains to be significantly impacted in the coming months. Severe delays in deliveries and further price increases are expected.

Recommendations for action

The impending tightening of component shortages is expected to be acute for at least the first half of 2023. We therefore recommend that our customers and interested parties place new orders early and plan electronics productions as long term as possible. By stocking up early, we can ensure the availability of critical components.

Our purchasing department remains in close contact with our global suppliers and uses all available options to ensure the availability of electronic components. Please check your inventories and provide with respective reserves to minimize the risks for your critical components.
