INVISIBLE, BUT NOT HARMLESS: EMF AT THE WORKPLACE

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are an integral part of our modern working world – and yet for many, they are largely unknown territory. Whether in production, in trade, in laboratories or in energy supply: Wherever machines are operated, electricity is conducted or radio technology is used, electromagnetic fields are generated – sometimes with considerable intensity.

And this is where the challenge begins:

EMFs cannot be seen, smelled or heard. However, their effect on the human body – especially on the nervous system or medical implants – can be considerable. This makes it all the more important not to underestimate these risks in the workplace, but to recognize and correctly assess them.

Occupational health and safety in times of modern technologies

In times of increasing digitalization and automation, the number of potential EMF sources is also growing. While traditional protective measures are well established in many companies, there is often still a lack of clarity when it comes to EMF:

  • What limits apply?
  • When is a risk assessment necessary – and what does it look like?
  • What is the difference between EMF and EMC?
  • And what is the employer’s responsibility when dealing with people with implants?

Such questions cannot be answered in passing – they require sound knowledge, practical experience and a feel for day-to-day operations.
