From the Circuit Board to the Finished Product: Device Assembly Using the LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree as an Example

A populated printed circuit board constitutes the electronic assembly—but it is not yet a finished product.
Several precisely coordinated process steps are required before the device is ready for use.

The production of the LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree at Baudisch Electronic illustrates how this works in practice.
This compact control module is used in building automation and can be employed, among other things, to control shading systems and switch electrical loads.

This real-world example shows how, at Baudisch Electronic, an electronic assembly is transformed, step by step,
into a tested, programmed, clearly labeled, fully assembled, and shipping-ready product.

From the printed circuit board to the electronic assembly

The printed circuit board is populated with electronic components in several steps. Both SMD and THT components are used in this process. Depending on their design, these components are soldered using the appropriate soldering method. Once all components have been mounted and soldered, the electronic assembly is fully populated and can be processed further in the next production step.

Preparing the lean workstation

Before the actual assembly of the equipment begins, the lean workstation is prepared for the respective production order. The necessary materials, tools, testing equipment, and information are provided in a complete and organized manner. Thanks to the clearly defined layout, all components are available exactly where they are needed in each process step. Short distances, on-demand material supply, and standardized procedures lay the foundation for an efficient and repeatable assembly process.

Among other things, the focus is on:

  • clearly structured jobs
  • short distances
  • defined process and assembly steps
  • Provision of materials based on need
  • Clear arrangement of tools and components
  • Continuous process optimization
  • Flexible adaptation to different products and quantities

For us, “lean” therefore means not only efficiency, but also process reliability, transparency, and consistently high quality.

Test, program, and clearly label

Once the lean workstations have been set up and prepared, the mass production assembly and testing of the assemblies begins. To do this, the assembled unit is placed in the designated test fixture.

There, the assembly is electronically tested, programmed with the necessary software, and subjected to a defined functional test.

This ensures, even before the actual installation of the device, that the assembly fulfills its intended functions and can be approved for the next step in the process.

After the inspection is successfully completed, a custom label is created. This label is affixed to the housing during assembly. It serves to uniquely identify the assembly and also supports traceability within the manufacturing process.

Only after successful testing, programming, and labeling is the assembly approved for subsequent device assembly.

Equipment installation

The next step is the actual assembly of the LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree. The tested and labeled subassembly is combined with the other product components and assembled into a complete device according to the defined assembly procedure. Thanks to the prepared lean workstation, all necessary materials and tools are located directly where they are needed. Short distances and clearly defined processes enable fast and repeatable assembly. This efficiently reduces both labor time and costs.

Step by step, the electronic assembly is transformed into the fully assembled product.

The finished product is assembled from the components

Once assembly is complete, the fully assembled product is ready. The LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree serves as a clear example of how the individual production stages at Baudisch Electronic are interlinked:

Printed Circuit Board → Electronics Manufacturing → Preparing the Lean Workstation → Testing & Programming → Labeling → Device Assembly → Packaging → Product Ready for Shipment

For our customers, this means that they not only receive a populated printed circuit board or an assembled device, but can also consolidate multiple manufacturing and assembly steps with a single EMS partner.

Depending on the project, our services include, among other things:

  • Procurement of the necessary electronic and mechanical components
  • Electronics manufacturing with SMD and THT assembly
  • Inspection and quality assurance, including electrical inspections and functional tests
  • Programming and configuration of modules
  • Labeling and traceability within the manufacturing process
  • Device assembly with integration of electronic and mechanical components
  • Packaging and shipping preparation

Depending on the customer’s requirements, this results in an end-to-end process chain—from material procurement and electronics manufacturing to the fully assembled and shipping-ready product.

Assembled, inspected, and ready for shipment

With the LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree, the manufacturing process does not end with the assembly of the device. The fully assembled products are packed directly on site into the designated packaging units and outer cartons, making them immediately ready for shipment. This eliminates an additional step in the process for the customer: The devices do not first have to be received, temporarily stored, and then picked and packed again. This creates a seamless process from electronics manufacturing to the finished product, ready for shipment. At the same time, it reduces the need for internal logistics processes, interim storage, and dedicated assembly and packaging space on the customer’s side.

This offers a clear advantage, especially for mass-produced items: manufacturing, assembly, and packaging flow seamlessly into one another—without additional interfaces or unnecessary interim storage.

Fewer interfaces, more efficient processes

Anyone who assembles electronic devices on their own or outsources individual manufacturing steps to multiple service providers must coordinate numerous processes. Materials must be available at the right time, testing equipment must be set up, assembly processes must be organized, and packaging and internal logistics must be taken into account. By consolidating electronics manufacturing, testing, programming, device assembly, and packaging, these interfaces can be reduced.

For our customers, this means:

  • clearly defined and consistent processes
  • A single point of contact for multiple production stages
  • less internal coordination effort
  • reduced temporary storage
  • less need for dedicated assembly and packaging space
  • products ready for shipment, straight from the production line

This allows for more targeted use of internal capacity and more efficient planning of warehouse and logistics space.

From the circuit board to the finished product, ready for shipment

The example of the LOXONE Nano 2 Relay Tree shows that device assembly goes far beyond the mere assembly of individual components. Electronics manufacturing, testing, programming, traceability, assembly, and packaging are all intertwined as part of an end-to-end process.

The result: a tested, fully assembled product packaged and ready for shipment—with fewer points of contact for the customer.

This process chain can be applied to many other electronic products—from building automation and industrial electronics to custom control systems.
